Amidst the ongoing legal proceedings concerning the Manipur violence, the WMC being an intervenor in the Supreme Court feels obligated to alert the Manipur government, specifically the Chief Minister, to the gravity of the situation, with the ultimate aim of benefiting the state of Manipur.
A press release by WMC said, “The following commissions, committees, Special Investigation Team (SIT), and retired IPS officers have been appointed by the central government and the Supreme Court (SC) to address the Manipur crisis. The Commission of Inquiry appointed by the central government, the Three Member Committee appointed by the SC, the SIT appointed by the SC, and the retired IPS Officers appointed by the SC have been operating within their designated parameters.
However, it is necessary for the Manipur State government to support the aforementioned Commission/Committee/SIT/Retd. IPS Officer by timely submitting relevant documents, records, and information, such as the number of people allegedly killed in the conflict, including Meetei, Kuki, and others, the number of villages destroyed in Churachandpur, Moreh, Kangpokpi, Imphal East, Imphal west, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, etc. based on government records of villages. This is important due to claims of fake villages being included in the list of affected villages, particularly considering the unnatural increase in population in specific areas resulting from unchecked illegal immigration from Myanmar and Bangladesh, the number of houses burned in all affected areas, the number of temples, churches, and places of worship destroyed in Churachandpur, Moreh, Kangpokpi, Imphal east, Imphal west, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, etc. During verification, it is crucial for the relevant authority to differentiate between genuine and fake churches, as well as distinguish between Meetei and Kuki churches. “
The press release further said the concerned authority must clarify, based on official records, the existence of illegal villages and churches that were settled and constructed, and subsequently removed by the State in accordance with the law.
Furthermore, it is necessary to clarify from official records the number of illegal villages and churches that were removed by the State according to the law from reserved and protected forests. This is essential to identify and eliminate fake and illegal villages and churches from the submitted lists without proper proof and verification.
Lastly, when submitting the number of people killed in the conflict, the authority should carefully indicate the number of Indian citizens and the number of Myanmarese individuals. The verification of citizenship can be done through government records and the National Register of Citizens (NRC), which should not pose any difficulties. This is particularly significant in light of the statement made by the Home Minister, Amit Shah, in Parliament, it added.
