Imphal, Dec 26:

Volunteers of the World Meitei Council (WMC) staged a Sit-in-protest at Jantar Mantar demanding the inclusion of the Meetei in the list of Scheduled Tribes of the Indian Constitution.
A statement from the WMC said that the demand for the inclusion of Meitei in the ST list is a long overdue on the part of the government. As for the state government, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh had told that he had already submitted all the necessary papers including the reports etc as desired by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, New Delhi.
“The Ball is in the court of the centre so WMC appeals earnestly to the Centre to expedite the process so that the Meetei people can live as rightful citizens in their own state of Manipur”, said WMC National Spokesperson Mr. Nabakishore Yumnam, who is also the president of WMC Assam unit.
While answering questions about Kuki-Chin people, the Chairman WMC Mr. Heigrujam Nabashyam made it clear that WMC has taken up the case of Kuki-Chin people’s legal maintainability even when they are migrants or children of migrants. A memorandum was also submitted to the Hon’ble Prime Minister from the Premises of Jantar Mantar Delhi.
