Union Home Minister Amit Shah to review security situation in Manipur

Imphal, June 17:

After resuming the portfolio of Ministry of Home Affairs for the second consecutive term, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to conduct a comprehensive review of the situation in Manipur. Sources indicate that Amit Shah will chair a high-level meeting in New Delhi today to assess the security circumstances in the state. This meeting, confirmed by the Ministry of Home Affairs, will include senior officials from the Central Government, the Manipur State Government, the Indian Army, and various other Security Forces. The agenda is expected to cover recent developments in the region, strategic responses to emerging threats, and the coordination of efforts between different agencies to ensure stability and safety in Manipur.
The urgency of this review is underscored by the recent escalation of tension in Jiribam, following the brutal murder of a 59-year-old resident of Sorok Atingbi Khunou on June 6. The aftermath of this incident has plunged the district into chaos, forcing residents of Mongbung Khul to abandon their homes and seek shelter at the LP School in Chingdong Leikai. The situation underscores the urgent need for protection and stability in the region.
Adding to the turmoil, reports have emerged of arson attacks targeting residential properties. In one incident, a house in Nunkhal and a farmhouse in Leisabithol were set ablaze by unknown individuals, further deepening the sense of insecurity among residents. These incidents highlight the critical need for an effective and immediate response to restore order and ensure the safety of the affected communities.
Earlier, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh had to cancel his proposed visit to Jiribam due to security concerns after his advance convoy was ambushed by Kuki armed militants near Kotlien. This high-level meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah likely follows the recent escalation of violence in Manipur’s Jiribam district and reflects serious concern over the attack on the Chief Minister’s security convoy.
There is also speculation about whether the meeting will address the statement by Bangladesh’s Prime Minister regarding Western countries’ plans to form a Christian state in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) and Chin state in Myanmar, which would be incomplete without carving out a portion of India’s North East. This geopolitical dimension could add another layer of complexity to the discussions, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive strategy to address both internal security and external threats.
It may be mentioned that Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey had called on Shah in New Delhi and discussed the prevailing situation Manipur.
