United Committee Manipur (UCM) has organized a program aimed at tracing the footsteps of Manipuris who have settled outside the state yesterday. The program sheds light on the historical journey of individuals who migrated from Manipur and established themselves in various regions.
The event welcomed distinguished personalities, with Ashok Sharma from Sylhet, Bangladesh, presiding over the program as the President. K. Joychandra Singh graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, while Maibam Utam Singh, Y. Nripendra Singh, Y.K. Dhiren (Vice President of UCM), and Kh. Shamendra from Bangladesh participated as Guests of Honor.
During the program, emphasis was placed on the significant historical contributions of individuals who migrated from Manipur, particularly during the tumultuous period of the seven years’ devastation. Notably, Maharaj Chourjit, Maharaj Marjit, and Maharaj Gambhir Singh were recognized for their pivotal roles during this period.
Of particular importance was the discussion surrounding Maharaj Gambhir Singh’s residence, Manikpur Rajbhari in Sylhet, Bangladesh, which was highlighted as a site of historical significance. Participants advocated for the preservation of Manikpur Rajbhari as an archaeological monument, emphasizing its role in Manipur’s history.
In this context, an appeal was made to the governments of Manipur, India, and Bangladesh to collaborate in safeguarding the historical significance of Manikpur Rajbhari. Historians were urged to visit the site, recognizing its immense importance in understanding Manipur’s past. It was at this location that Maharaj Gambhir Singh initiated the Manipur Levy, a critical step in seeking assistance from the British to liberate Manipur from Burma.
The program concluded with a renewed commitment to preserving Manipur’s rich historical legacy and ensuring that the contributions of individuals who settled outside the state are duly recognized and commemorated.
