Imphal, June 15:

The Government of Manipur has issued a severe weather warning for Tamenglong district, forecasting a thunderstorm with lightning and very heavy rainfall for Tuesday, 18 June 2024. This special weather bulletin was released by the Indian Meteorological Department, under the Ministry of Earth Science, and highlights the potential danger posed by the upcoming weather conditions.
Dr. Langshim Dangshawa, Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), has urged the residents of Tamenglong to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. He emphasized the importance of staying informed by regularly checking weather updates and warnings from local, state, and national authorities.
Residents are advised to reinforce old doors and windows, secure any loose objects around their homes, and stay indoors unless absolutely necessary. Outdoor activities such as agriculture and fishing should be postponed until the weather improves. It is critical to avoid flood-prone and landslide-prone areas, rivers, and streams, and to move to safer locations if needed.
Additionally, the bulletin includes detailed guidelines for safety during thunderstorms and lightning. These recommendations stress the importance of seeking immediate shelter in a secure building or hard-top vehicle, avoiding elevated areas, isolated trees, and bodies of water, and staying away from windows, doors, and concrete floors while indoors. It is also advised to unplug electrical appliances and avoid using corded phones during the storm.
Travelers are encouraged to postpone trips if thunderstorms are forecasted and to seek shelter in safe buildings or vehicles if caught in a storm. Those in vehicles should keep all windows up and remain inside until the storm passes.
The district administration has emphasized the need for immediate first aid in the event of a lightning strike, which can be life-saving. In case of emergencies, residents can contact the district helpline at 9402816594 or 8794640970. Sub-Divisional Offices in Tamenglong, Tamei, and Tousem can also be reached at the following numbers: 9612550202 or 8794357192 for Tamenglong, 8414969579 for Tamei, and 8415957588 or 6009006819 for Tousem.
