Imphal, Aug 1:

Meira Paibis of Sugnu and Serou of Kakching district has strongly refuted claims of Assam Rifles over the distribution of relief materials to them as reported in some local daily.
General Secretary of Lamjing Lup Sugnu, A. Chaothoisana, while speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club today afternoon said that the stranded people of Sugnu and Serou have never accepted any kind of relief materials from the Assam Rifles as the people want the Assam Rifles to contain the Kuki militants and protect the Meitei inhabitants of Serou and Sugnu.
“Earlier, the Meira Paibis of Sugnu, Wapokpi, Tangjeng, and Korshantabi had an agreement with the 37 AR posted at the area for not accepting any relief material from the AR until peace is restored and the situation become normal”, Chaothoisana told media persons. She said that the people are living in fear as there are possibility of the Kuki militants attacking the Serou Sugnu area once more. In the wake of the apprehension, the people of the Sugnu and Serou have been urging the Assam Rifles to assure that life of the civilians in the area are protected. And this could be only possible after the Assam Rifles stop providing assistance to the Kuki militants.
“We have lost trust in the Assam Rifles and before distributing any aids to the people they rather have the confidence of the people”, the Meira Paibi leader told.
In connection with the distribution of the relief items, she said that the Assam Rifles did distribute the materials to around 50 Meira Paibis , however, after knowing that the AR had distributed those items by violating the agreement, they finally return the items distributed to them to the Assam Rifles.
