Situation in Jiribam deteriorates as Kuki Militants gain control; CM convoy ambushed, one injured

IT News
Imphal, June 10:

The situation in Jiribam district continues to deteriorate, with district administration and security forces struggling to maintain control. Armed Kuki militants appear to have seized control of the area, even ambushing a convoy of security troops on NH-37 near T Laijang village, close to Kotlien in Kangpokpi district, earlier this morning.
During the ambush, police driver Moirangthem Ajesh, also known as Bobo, aged 28 and son of M. Shyamji from Thanga Ngaram Bishnupur, was hit by a bullet in his thigh. He was immediately rushed to Shija Hospital in Langol for treatment.
Reports indicate that the security convoy was en route to Jiribam in preparation for Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s visit to the district. The escalating violence and the recent ambush underscore the critical and volatile nature of the situation in Jiribam, necessitating urgent and effective intervention from both district and central authorities.
Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, currently in New Delhi attending the oath-taking ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with other cabinet ministers, is set to visit Jiribam to assess the deteriorating situation. In preparation for his visit, security has been intensified along NH-37 and in the Jiribam area.
Despite these measures, armed Kuki militants appear to be one step ahead in their efforts to control the district. This morning, they ambushed a security convoy on NH-37 near T Laijang village, targeting the convoy ahead of the Chief Minister’s visit.
Additionally, reports indicate that Kuki militants are intensifying their attacks in Jiribam district with well-planned assaults at various locations. Last night, heavily armed Kuki militants attempted to destroy the Leishabi Bridge and set a house ablaze near Nganukharam. Around 11:30 PM, these militants fired several rounds, intimidating the villagers of Makha Basti near JT Road. The same group of militants also destroyed another bridge at Harinagar.
These coordinated attacks further underscore the critical and volatile nature of the situation in Jiribam. The district administration and security forces are under severe strain, unable to effectively control the escalating violence. The attacks are occurring ahead of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s visit to the area, where he is expected to take stock of the deteriorating situation.
With militants targeting key infrastructure and civilian areas, there is an urgent need for enhanced security measures and decisive action from both district and central authorities to restore order and protect the residents of Jiribam.
