Imphal Valley remains beleaguered by severe flooding following relentless rainfall that has battered Manipur over the past few days. The Power House at Yurembam in Imphal West is gradually flooding due to the overflow of the Merakhong River. Despite ongoing preventive measures, the potential shutdown of the powerhouse looms, threatening to plunge a significant portion of Imphal Valley into darkness.
Further exacerbating the crisis, breaches in the Maklang River at Nambol Thangtek and the Kongba River at Mongkhang Lambi have unleashed torrents of water into residential areas. National Highway 102 at Singjamei Keithel, Singjamei Thongam Leikai, Kakwa Naorem Leikai and its environs Chanam Pukhri Mapal, and Canchipur—remain inundated due to floodwaters from a breach at Singjamei Oinam Thingel. However, the 40-foot breach at Singjamei Oinam Thingel was repaired today by local volunteers, the Assam Rifles, MPA, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
Relief camps for displaced residents have been established at Waikhom Leikai and the Community Hall in Singjamei Parking. Rescue operations are being conducted by the Army, Assam Rifles, State Police, Manipur Fire Service, NDRF, and SDRF personnel, along with local volunteers. Utilizing boats, they are evacuating flood-affected individuals and distributing essential supplies such as packaged water bottles and food packets.
Major rivers traversing Imphal Valley—the Nambul, Imphal, Kongba, and Iril—continue to surge at danger level. As a precautionary measure, the Directorate of Education (S) has announced an additional two-day holiday on July 5 and 6 for all Government, Government-aided, Private, and Central Schools in the state.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning over East and Northeast India are expected for the coming few days due to the presence of one or more cyclonic courses over Manipur with a trough extending from Northeast Madhya Pradesh to Manipur.
