INDIA Bloc leader Sotin Kumar has sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent speech, claiming that the PM’s policies indicate a preference for prolonging the conflict rather than seeking a political solution.
Speaking at a press conference held by the INDIA Bloc at Congress Bhawan, CLP leader and former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi stated, “We are not looking to gain any political advantage. The state has been in turmoil since May 2023, and the issues persist. Our focus is on restoring normalcy, and ten political parties have been working towards this goal. PM Modi has addressed the situation, but it remains unclear whether the state government is functioning, if Article 355 is being implemented, or if the elected government has the authority it needs.” He has further stated that “a delegation should meet with the PM, and the appointment should be arranged by the CM. We have requested an appointment but are unsure if it has been pursued or denied by the PM.”
Sotin Kumar, a CPI leader, added, “PM Narendra Modi spoke about Manipur for just six minutes, which is irrelevant given the gravity of the situation. The Manipur issue was a significant agenda item in Parliament, but the PM’s speech did not address the ongoing crisis adequately. His remarks show a disregard for Manipur. We demand a political solution and dialogue to understand the root causes of the conflict. Instead, PM Modi seems intent on prolonging the conflict, similar to the situation in Ukraine, possibly inviting foreign intervention.”
Sotin Kumar also highlighted the current state of governance under Article 355, noting that the powers of the Manipur CM have been curtailed. “We are struggling within Parliament, with many raising this issue. The PM’s focus on military solutions over political dialogue is evident, as seen by the 11,000 FIRs and 500 arrests. At this juncture, we need a comprehensive political strategy to address the crisis in Manipur.”
