National Handloom Day observed; One kg of extracted Bixa Orella (Ureirom) cost around Rs. 10,000/- and this is much benefitted than the poppy plants – Prof Rajmuhon

The 9th National Handloom Day was observed today at the Common Facility Center (Handloom) Thongju Part 2 in Imphal East district.
The observance was graced by Prof. N. Rajmuhon Singh, Vice Chancellor of DM University Manipur as Chief Guest while, S. Bhubol, President of the Shintha Handloom & Handicrafts, presided over it. Konsam Ibomcha Singh, Padmashree (Fading – Crafts) and Gurumayam Shanti Devi, Shilpa Guru Awardee (Handloom) attended as guests of honour.
Speaking on the occasion Prof. N. Rajmuhon Singh said that mass plantation of plants used for dyeing like Ureirom (Bixa Orella), Kum (Strobilanthus cusia), Yachubi (Osbeckia Chinensis), Chingsu (Tectona grandis), Theichak (Bischofera tinctoria), Sahi (Quercis truncata) plants is more benefitted than poppy plantation. He called on the people of the state to replace the poopy plantation by the plants use for dyeing which are indigenous plants of the state.
“One kg of extracted Annatto tree (Ureirom) cost around Rs. 10,000/- and this is much benefitted than the poppy plants”, Prof Rajmuhon told.
S. Bhubol while speaking on the occasion said that it is time that we the people of the region started promoting our own indigenous handloom products. He said that if our government employees and others started using our own indigenous clothes then misunderstanding in recognition of the ethnic community may be shorted out. Bhubol was referring to the confusion of the identity of ethnic communities in the state.
