Union Ministry of Home Affairs has deployed 10 (ten) more companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to the trouble-torn state of Manipur in addition to the 124 companies of CAPF and the 144 columns of Assam Rifles and Army sent earlier since the eruption of the violence on May 3.
Of the ten CAPF companies, six have already reached Imphal, and the remaining four companies are expected to reach here by today evening or tomorrow. Source said that the additional central forces are likely to deploy at Tengnoupal and Kangpokpi districts.
Police reports said that a gunfight between a combined team of 5/9 GR & 21 SF with militants took place yesterday evening at village A. Mungchamkom under New Keithelmanbi Police Station. The combined team arrested one individual who is a cadre of non-So0 organisation. One SLR along with 01(one) magazine and 50 rounds were seized from his possession, the police report said.
Report reaching here said that unabated firing continues at the periphery between Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts. Mentioned may be made that a heavy gun battle occurred between armed Kuki militants and the security forces since yesterday morning in the aftermath of the slaughtering of three Meitei civilians including a father and a son at Kwakta village in Bishnupur district. A source to Imphal Times said that as many as 11 Kuki militants may have been killed and six persons including a security personnel and a woman civilian sustained injury.
There are also reports of miscreants attempting to snatch weapons from a police team at Toupokpi Police Outpost in Lilong Chajing, Imphal-West district yesterday afternoon. A statement from the state police said that the attempt to snatch weapons from the police was foiled and those miscreants were chased and recovered all four weapons. One person was arrested and the car used by the miscreants was also recovered. Raids continued till late hours at Imphal West district to arrest other culprits.
On the other hand, the security forces are conducting continuous raids in both hill and valley areas to recover the looted arms and ammunition. A police report said that 1057 arms and 14201 ammunitions have been recovered in the valley districts and 138 arms and 121 ammunitions have been recovered in the hill districts so far. Since the outbreak of the violence on May 3, a total of 4617 arms have been reported looted from state armories located in the districts of Imphal East, Imphal West, Kakching, Thoubal, Bishnupur, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Tengnoupal, and Kamjong. The police team along with the Central Forces are conducting raids to recover looted arms and ammunition at different places.
