Imphal, Mar 17:

Following the activation of the Model Code of Conduct, District Magistrates in Manipur have mandated the submission of all licensed weapons to nearby police stations. This directive comes amidst growing apprehensions regarding the proliferation of illegal arms, which remain largely unchecked despite the ongoing crisis in the region.
Upon the announcement of the poll schedule by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar on March 16, District Magistrates swiftly issued orders for the surrender of licensed firearms to ensure the integrity of the electoral process. However, concerns persist over the government’s failure to effectively address the issue of illegal arms procurement, prevalent among both valley and hill district residents.
The imposition of the Model Code of Conduct underscores the imperative of maintaining law and order during the electoral period. It is the duty of District Magistrates to enforce measures aimed at facilitating a free and fair election, including the submission of licensed weapons. Yet, the efficacy of such actions is called into question in light of the continued circulation of illegal firearms.
The proliferation of illegal arms poses a significant challenge to the security landscape of Manipur, exacerbating tensions and compromising public safety. Despite efforts to curb this menace, the lack of robust enforcement measures has allowed the illicit arms trade to thrive, raising concerns about its potential impact on electoral proceedings and broader societal stability.
As Manipur prepares for the upcoming polls, addressing the issue of illegal arms remains a critical priority for authorities. Failure to mitigate this threat risks undermining the democratic process and exacerbating existing tensions within the region. Consequently, concerted efforts must be made to not only ensure the submission of licensed weapons but also to effectively combat the illicit proliferation of firearms, safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process and the safety of all citizens.
