The Manipur Naga Youth Organization (MNYO) strongly condemned the desecration of Govajang Church, labeling it as sacrilegious and offensive to the Christian community. “Words are not enough to express our condemnation and disapproval of this violation. Even during times of war, places of worship are typically respected and left untouched because they are considered sacred. It is extremely unfortunate to witness volunteers from the valley mocking a church and holding the Bible, a holy book for Christians. This behavior is deeply saddening, causing distress within the Christian community and potentially fostering grievances among Christians and non-Christians,” said TP. Dining, General Secretary of MNYO.
The statement highlighted that the incident at Govajang Church, which has been widely circulated through a viral video, demonstrates the destruction and mockery that took place within the sacred premises. This constitutes a clear violation of the fundamental principles of religious freedom and coexistence.
Manipur, known for its diverse population, is home to a significant Christian community within the Meitei community. Such actions not only pose a threat to the social fabric but also undermine the region’s long-standing tradition of harmonious coexistence, the statement emphasized.
It further stated that the wanton destruction of religious institutions, regardless of the faith they represent, cannot be justified. These actions only deepen existing divisions and cause profound harm to the community.
However, the MNYO clarified that the ongoing conflict is not a religious issue or fight. It goes beyond religious boundaries and is an attack on the principles of peace and coexistence.
“We urge all parties involved in the conflict to show restraint and engage in peaceful dialogue to find a resolution that respects the rights and dignity of every community. Additionally, we call on the authorities to promptly investigate the incident, hold those responsible accountable, and implement concrete measures to prevent further acts of religious intolerance and violence,” the MNYO statement concluded.
