Imphal, May 9:

The Meitei Society, Churachandpur, vehemently condemned the recent gun attack on Sawaijam Dhanabir Meitei, a Churachandpur resident now displaced at the Thanga Wangma Relief Camp. The incident occurred yesterday morning at around 8 am at the gate of the relief camp.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Manipur Press Club, M Ramesh Singh, the General Secretary (Admin) of Meitei Society Churachandpur, expressed outrage over the incident.
He stressed that even if Dhanabir had committed any wrongdoing, he should have been given the chance to explain and resolve any issues through peaceful means.
“Using violence, especially resorting to a gun attack aimed at taking a life, is utterly condemnable. Dhanabir is a fellow displaced individual from Churachandpur, now residing in a relief camp. He is one of the many enduring the pain of the conflict,” stated Singh.
He further called upon those responsible for the attack to provide clarity on their motivations and urged authorities tasked with maintaining peace and security to prevent such incidents from recurring.
In an interview with Imphal Times yesterday, Oinam Saratchandra, the relief camp’s secretary, recounted the events while awaiting the victim’s surgery at Raj Medicity. Saratchandra mentioned that an individual on an Activa motorcycle fired multiple shots at 28-year-old Dhanabir, causing severe injuries. The attacker may have been waiting at the gate, as the shots were fired upon the victim’s arrival at the relief camp from another location, he added. Dhanabir has undergone surgery at Raj Medicity and is currently in stable condition.
