In a recent onslaught of severe weather, Manipur has been plunged into chaos as heavy rains and hailstorms wreaked havoc across the state. The aftermath has left residents in a state of panic, with forecasts suggesting the turbulent weather may persist for the next few days.
Official reports have detailed significant damage inflicted by Sunday’s hailstorm, particularly in districts such as Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Noney, and Bishnupur. Tin roofs were pierced by hailstones, puncturing holes in several houses, while eyewitness videos circulated online portrayed the destructive force of strong winds, toppling hutments in various localities.
The calamitous thunderstorm and hailstorm event of May 5th have dealt a devastating blow to Manipur’s agricultural sector, leaving it in ruins. The toll extends beyond mere physical damage, encompassing profound implications for the region’s economy and society. In light of the ongoing weather predicament, the Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rains spanning several Northeastern states, including Manipur, until May 7th.
In response to the crisis, Chief Minister N Biren Singh has taken swift action, announcing the closure of all educational institutions until tomorrow. “All schools and colleges will remain closed on May 6th and 7th, 2024, due to the prevailing weather conditions in the state,” declared the Chief Minister via a statement on official channels. Additionally, helpline numbers have been made available to aid those affected by the hailstorm across various areas.
