Manipur International Youth Centre (MIYC) appeals to the government to devise mechanisms to improve the situation of the Manipuri language. Currently, the status of Manipuri as a subject in schools is dire, with a decreasing number of students opting for it. The Centre urges the government to make Manipuri language a compulsory subject in the curriculum of CBSE, BoSEM, and CoHSEM boards to encourage greater participation among students.
In the academic session of 2023-24, only 2,731 students in Class X and Class XII out of 84 schools took the Manipuri language in CBSE examinations, with only 783 students in Class XI. Similarly, in BoSEM, out of 37,715 students, only 22,443 opted for the Manipuri language, and out of 31,267 students, only 21,125 chose Manipuri in CoHSEM.
This decline is attributed to a reductionist understanding and the implementation of the policy of “one nation, one culture, and one language.” Furthermore, in publications by NCERT, Manipur’s history, culture, traditions, and indigenous heritage have been distorted. The 1891 Anglo-Manipur War is even misrepresented as part of India’s freedom movement, the statement added.
