The Manipur State Government has officially denied recent reports claiming that the European Union (EU) has provided financial assistance of 250,000 euros (approximately Rs. 2.25 crore) for storm relief efforts in the state. According to a statement from Chief Secretary Dr. Vineet Joshi, the government has clarified that all financial needs related to the recent severe storm are being covered by the National Disaster Response Fund and the State Disaster Response Fund.
Dr. Joshi emphasized that all relief operations are being conducted through the respective Deputy Commissioners, security forces, and public volunteers. He also noted that no non-governmental organizations (NGOs) or civil society organizations have been involved in the relief efforts.
In addition to the funds from the national and state disaster response funds, the state government has already allocated Rs 30 crore to the Deputy Commissioners of the affected districts to facilitate the ongoing relief work.
This clarification follows a report dated May 29, which suggested that the EU had announced a financial aid package of 250,000 euros to support those affected by a hailstorm and heavy rain in Manipur earlier in May. The EU had stated in its announcement: “The European Union has made available 250,000 euros in response to the recent hailstorm and heavy rain that hit India’s northeastern state of Manipur in early May.”
However, the Manipur government maintains that all current relief funding is being sourced domestically, with no external financial assistance from the EU.
