Liangmei Naga warns poppy planters, says stern action will be taken up

Liangmai Naga Council, Manipur – the apex organisation of Liangmai Naga Tribe has warned the poppy planters in Liangmei Naga Inhabited areas of Manipur to destroy the poppy crops by October this year. The Council said that stern action against the poppy planters would be taken as per the customary law if fails to follow the directives.
A statement of the President Liangmai Naga Council, Manipur, R. Machundaobou said that the decision to ban the Poppy plantation in Liangmei Naga inhabited areas of Manipur was resolved in the council’s Half Yearly meeting held on October 12 at Tamah, (Piuleklong) Tamei Sub- division, Tamenglong District.
“The General body unanimously resolved to ban Poppy plantation/cultivation in Liangmai Naga inhabited areas of Manipur with immediate effect and LNC directed all the concerned village authorities to destroy within October 2023 failing which the LNC will take stern action against poppy planters as per customary law”, the statement said.
The Liangmai body further resolved in its meeting that no portion of land or forest shall be allowed to carry out or leased out to anyone for the purpose of poppy plantation in Liangmai Naga areas. The Council further appealed to the government of India and the Government of Manipur to take serious action to eradicate the illegal poppy plantations and appeal to all the right-thinking citizens to contribute and give the best effort to create a drug-free community.
