Vendors at Ima Market, one of the largest all-women markets in Imphal, have voiced their distress as the recent floodwaters submerged goods worth crores of rupees.
Lukmai Selup, a women’s organisation, have come forward demanding compensation for their losses. The flood has resulted in the submersion of all items kept in the market, exacerbating the financial strain on vendors.
Speaking to reporters, a fish vendor lamented the loss of goods stored in the market’s warehouse, including fish worth 12 lakh rupees. Essential equipment such as generators and pots have also been engulfed by the floodwaters.
Expressing their grievances, vendors emphasized the significant impact of the flood on their livelihoods and the local economy. One woman highlighted the economic significance of Ima Market, describing it as the backbone of the community’s economy. She expressed concerns that the market’s operations could be severely disrupted if immediate action is not taken.
The submerged basement, where vendors store their goods, has become a cause for concern, with fears looming that the market may cease to function effectively if the situation persists.
In light of these challenges, vendors are calling upon the government to intervene and provide compensation to alleviate their financial losses. They stress the urgent need for assistance to restore normalcy and ensure the continued operation of the market, which plays a crucial role in sustaining the local economy.
