Former CM N. Biren expresses concern over displacement, calls for swift rehabilitation of IDPs

Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has expressed deep concern over the plight of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who continue to live in temporary relief camps across various parts of the state, stating that the situation could have been mitigated had President’s Rule not been imposed in the state.
As part of the Ningol Chakkouba celebration, the Uripok Apunba Lup and Uripok Apunba Nupi Lup jointly organized a relief event at Langol Ningthou Laibung, Lamboikhongnangkhong, and Langol Leima Khullen in Imphal West District, where food and gifts were distributed to displaced women taking shelter in relief camps. A total of around 600 women from two relief camps participated in the event.
Speaking at the occasion, N. Biren stated that during his tenure as Chief Minister, the government had begun efforts to rehabilitate IDPs by resettling them in their respective localities and initiating reconstruction and livelihood programs. However, he lamented that such initiatives appear to have slowed down under the current administration.
He further noted that although the number of displaced persons in relief camps has decreased, many families have been relocated without adequate rehabilitation measures, and people continue to suffer from neglect and lack of support. Biren reiterated that the government must take concrete steps to ensure the safety, dignity, and proper resettlement of all displaced persons.
During the event, S. Tikendrajit, President of Uripok Apunba Lup, highlighted that certain third parties are exploiting the ongoing situation, and urged for transparent and fair handling of rehabilitation efforts. He also called for continued public assistance to improve the living conditions of the displaced families still residing in relief camps.
