Imphal, June 2:

A devastating flash flood that submerged much of Imphal Valley since May 28 has resulted in the loss of over 90% of the medicine stocks at various pharmaceutical wholesalers and retailers in Imphal. The General Secretary of the Manipur Chemists & Druggists Association (MCDA), Dijamani, reported the extensive damage to reporters.
Dijamani revealed that between 90% to 95% of medicines stored in warehouses were submerged in the flood. Despite the significant loss, he urged the public not to panic, assuring that the Association would take all necessary measures to ensure the availability of medicines. He however added that transportation of drugs are facing problem due to the landslides in both highways.
“The total cost of the medicine lost in the flood may exceed Rs. 15 crore. Some of this loss might be recoverable through the companies, but it may not amount to more than Rs. 5 crore,” Dijamani stated. He also emphasized the need for government intervention, suggesting that compensation for some of the losses would be beneficial for both wholesalers and retailers.
The MCDA is working diligently to mitigate the impact of this disaster on the availability of essential medicines in the region, striving to restore supply and meet the community’s needs despite the challenging circumstances.
