A 56-year-old man from Khongjom succumbed to COVID-19 at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) COVID Care Centre in Imphal on Wednesday at around 2:30 am.
The deceased is the first COVID-19 fatality in the state. He was admitted to RIMS on May 5 and was found to be positive of COVID-19 on July 26.
The deceased was suffering from multiple ailments, including chronic kidney disease and diabetes. In addition, the deceased had multiple sessions of dialysis, Prof Ch. Arunkumar Singh, Medical superintendent of RIMS said.
According to Prof Ch. Arunkumar, the cause of death is Chronic Kidney disease, respiratory tract infection, COVID-19, Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus and Hypertension.
Meanwhile, mass testing of staffs of RIMS has been done today. Earlier the MS of the RIMS had stated that RIMS will be closed till July 29 even though emergency service and some others still remain open, the MS said that as testing of the staffs could not be completed as of today the RIMS has decided to open its OPD by August 1.
“We worry that the virus might contract to patients and attendants who visited RIMS, so we shut down some department including the OPD for some time to make sure that the virus don’t spread to patients attending the hospital”, Prof. Arun said. He however added that emergency services, ante natal and other department are still open.
The MS further opine to have a separate COVID-19 hospital as other patients could be provided proper health care amidst COVID time.
“We will be checking all non-COVID patients attending the hospital using equipments which will not take more than 10 minutes”, the MS added.
