Field Day focusing on value-added products from underutilized indigenous fruits and vegetables showcased promising avenues for agricultural advancement in Chandel. The event, held at Chandolpokpi Village, drew attention to the nutritional richness of these often-overlooked produce items.
Dr. A. Ameeta Devi, Senior Scientist & Head of ICAR – KVK Chandel, led the proceedings alongside key local figures. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Y. Prabhabati Devi, SMS (Home Science), emphasized the untapped potential of indigenous fruits and vegetables, rich in vital nutrients, which typically go to waste during their season.
The event highlighted the importance of converting these underutilized resources into value-added products to boost both farmer income and community nutrition. Dr. Ameeta Devi stressed the significance of utilizing available technology to minimize post-harvest losses and maximize productivity.
M.K Chongrum, Chief of Chandolpokpi village, commended the positive impact of fruit and vegetable processing on waste reduction, urging farmers to embrace such practices. Meanwhile, R. Youthem, Chief of Ziontlang Village, emphasized the need for adopting KVK-developed post-harvest technologies to enhance agricultural efficiency.
The Field Day also facilitated interactive sessions between scientists and farmers, fostering knowledge exchange and practical insights. Attendees had the opportunity to view displays of value-added products created by local farm women and received essential inputs for agricultural preservation and packaging.
