Jiribam, July 2:

The ongoing ethnic clashes in Jiribam, Manipur, have caused significant distress and destruction within the diverse communities residing in the region, prompting the Bengali community to submit a representation to the Governor’s office seeking immediate intervention.
The violence, which began on June 6, 2024, has resulted in loss of lives and property, sowing seeds of division and mistrust among the residents. The escalating conflict has had a devastating impact on the livelihoods of the local population, with fishermen facing insecurity, rubber workers struggling to access their farms, and the discontinuation of NREGS work depriving many of a crucial supplementary income. Today, a sit-in protest was held at Lalpani Bazar Shed, Jiribam, jointly organized by the All Jiribam Muslim Socio Economic & Cultural Development Organisation, Hindu Jagaran Manch, Jiribam; All Jiribam Muslim Welfare Society; and Namasudra Parishad, Latingkhal, Jiribam.
In their representation, the Bengali community of Jiribam urged the Governor to take decisive steps to resolve the crisis, including:
– Deploying adequate security forces to prevent further violence and protect the residents.
– Facilitating peace talks between the conflicting parties to address their grievances.
– Supporting community-building initiatives to rebuild trust and harmony.
– Providing humanitarian assistance to those affected by the clashes.
– Ensuring educational continuity for students and the reconstruction of damaged homes.
