Doctors, students and staff of JNIMS denounce attack to Director’s residence; protest staged, condemnation pours

Doctors, MBBS students and staff of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) today staged a sit-in protest in front of the A-Block of the Institution denouncing the gun attack on the residence of JNIMS director Dr. Laishram Deben.
“We strongly condemn the attack to the residence of Dr. Deben at his Kakwa Asem Leikai, Imphal West by firing 11 rounds of gunshots”, a student representative of the MBBS students of JNIMS told media persons.
He said that since the outbreak of the crisis in Manipur Dr. Deben in his capacity has been providing various activities to make sure that all those victims affected by the crisis are provided full health care service. A girl student from Moreh, Angelica who has been taking shelter at a relief camp, after her house along with others vandalized and driven out by Kuki militants scored high marks in the NEET examination, and almost lost hope of studying MBBS course. It was JNIMS Director L. Deben who came forward and assured all help including monetary assistance for her study until she completed her MBBS course.
On the other hand, Dr. Deven is known for her social service and treatment of poor patients without any charge at JNIMS. He had successfully given life to a Kidney patient who had lost all hopes of survival due to financial conditions.
“During this hard time Dr, Deben is working days and night to assure that victims of the ongoing violence are provided all short of health care service including medicines” ” a Doctor joining the protest said.
On the other hand, the Relief Committee JNIMS – which is taking a major role in extending treatment facilities to those injured and those victims in need of medical attendance during the ongoing crisis in Manipur since May 3, today expressed strong condemnation to the attack at the residence of Dr. Laishram Deben, Director JNIMS by unknown armed miscreants at around 10.30 pm of November 6.
Armed miscreants, who came in a four-wheeler vehicle fired 11 rounds of gunshots at the residence of JNIMS Director L. Deben at Kakwa Asem leikai under Kakwa Police station. A parked Santro car was severely damaged however, there were no human casualties.
The convenor of the Relief Committee K. Seityajit said that it was with the sincere hard work of the doctors at JNIMS under the guidance of Director L Deben and Superintendent Dr. Lokeshwar. The Relief committee strongly condemned such an attack and appealed to all those responsible not to repeat such an act in the future.
