Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has announced a ban on the admission process for college departments lacking adequate or no teaching staff. During a press conference held today, Nongthombam Thoithoiba, Secretary General of DESAM, expressed grave concern over the prevailing situation in certain colleges where departments either lack teachers or have an insufficient number according to university regulations.
N Thoithoiba stated, “Departments in colleges without the requisite number of teachers should immediately cease admission processes.” Additionally, DESAM cautioned that “any disregard for this directive by college principals or department heads would be deemed a violation of student rights and met with consequences.”
The absence of adequate faculty in these departments has resulted in instances of over-admission, leading to an overload on existing resources and compromising the quality of education. Consequently, students resort to unfair means during examinations due to a lack of proper guidance and instruction, N Thoithoiba added.
DESAM squarely places the blame on the “Education Minister, Commissioner, and Director for the current dire state of affairs.” The organisation accuses them of neglecting their responsibilities and prioritizing personal gain over the welfare of students. Furthermore, DESAM condemns college principals and department heads for perpetuating this practice, thereby exacerbating the plight of students.
The urgent intervention of the Education Minister, Commissioner, and Director is sought to rectify these issues promptly. DESAM urges them to “prioritize addressing the shortage of teachers and ensuring quality education for all students. Instead of focusing on personal endeavours, they must prioritize the welfare of students and the integrity of the education system instead of running after supply, construction and contract works.”
Lastly, DESAM holds the Chief Minister accountable for his apparent indifference to the deteriorating state of education in Manipur. It calls for immediate action to remedy the situation and uphold the rights of students to receive quality education.
