CM Biren discusses security issues along Jiribam-Cachar with Assam CM

Guwahati, June 23:

Chief Minister N. Biren Singh of Manipur met with his Assam counterpart, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in Guwahati today to discuss pressing security concerns along the Jiribam-Cachar inter-state boundary.
This high-level meeting follows a spate of ethnic violence in Manipur’s Jiribam district in early June, which forced many residents to seek refuge in the adjacent Cachar district of southern Assam. Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, accompanied by senior minister L. Susindro Singh, traveled to Guwahati yesterday and is expected to return to Imphal following their discussions.
Sources report that the two chief ministers focused on enhancing coordination among their respective police forces to effectively counter militant activities along the border. Additionally, measures to prevent the spillover of ethnic violence from Manipur into Assam were a priority topic. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had previously directed officials to ensure robust humanitarian aid for those fleeing the violence.
Report said that tight vigil is being maintained along the Assam-Manipur boundary, with regular patrolling and area domination operations in place to maintain security by the Assam Police.
Jiribam, known for its diverse ethnic population including Meiteis, Muslims, Nagas, Kukis, and non-Manipuris, had been relatively unaffected by the ethnic conflict that has gripped Manipur since May last year.
