Pallab Sen Gupta, National Secretary of the Communist Party of India (CPI), stated in a press conference today that further administrative division of Manipur is unlikely. Speaking in Imphal, Sen Gupta addressed various political and social issues concerning the state, emphasizing that a meeting with the state unit had taken place to discuss the condition of Manipur.
He congratulated the party workers for their efforts in helping the INDIA bloc candidate defeat the BJP in the elections. He attributed the NDA’s success at the general election to the lack of a proper seat-sharing formula within the INDIA bloc. “If a proper seat-sharing formula had been established, the BJP would have lost,” he asserted.
Regarding the political climate in Manipur, Pallab Sen Gupta remarked, “Chief Minister Biren Singh could have resigned after the election results, but he is not prepared to do so.” He noted that there are efforts at the central level to prevent further turmoil in Manipur.
He expressed deep concern for the people of Manipur, describing them as “refugees in their own state” and called for a permanent solution that respects the unity and territorial integrity of Manipur. He strongly opposed the creation of multiple autonomous administrative entities within the state, advocating instead for the preservation of Manipur’s current character.
“We believe that the present character of Manipur should not be changed. Nevertheless, there should be a permanent solution,” he stated. He highlighted the importance of revisiting the history of Manipur, particularly its integration into India, noting that the people had been bypassed in these historical decisions.
