In a significant effort to raise public awareness about the plight of pangolins, the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), supported by the Wildlife Conservation Network’s Pangolin Crisis Fund and in collaboration with the Ukhrul Forest Division, has installed awareness signages in Ava Market and Hamleikhong, en route to the Manipur Rifles Camp in Ukhrul, Manipur.
During an interview with the media, Eno Chingri Soror Rumthao highlighted the community’s positive response to this conservation initiative. He also extended special thanks to David Kashungnao (MCS), Chief Executive Officer of the Autonomous District Council, Ukhrul, for granting the necessary permissions.
Pangolins, listed under Schedule I of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, are critically endangered due to rampant trafficking for their scales and meat. These wild mammals are vital for natural pest control and soil quality improvement, and their decline poses severe ecological risks.
The signage installation event was attended by Range Forest Officer Ms. Chermishan ASP and field officers from WTI, underscoring the importance of the initiative. The signages aim to reduce the demand for pangolin products and enhance community awareness about the necessity of protecting this species.
By educating the public and encouraging community involvement, this initiative seeks to foster a sense of responsibility and urgency in protecting pangolins. The signages serve as constant reminders of the critical role these animals play in maintaining ecological balance and the severe consequences of their decline.
Overall, the concerted efforts of WTI, the Pangolin Crisis Fund, and the Ukhrul Forest Division, supported by local authorities and communities, mark a significant step towards the conservation of pangolins in Manipur.
