During the question hour of the ongoing Fifth session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly, CM Biren Singh has assured that another security force would be deployed to guard the border, replacing the Assam Rifles from this role.
Replying to MLA K Ranjit during today’s question hour, CM Biren Singh, who also holds the portfolio of Home Minister, said that it would be unjust to blame the entire Assam Rifles as many have alleged that they are favoring a particular community. Regarding these allegations, he assured that “specific allegations prompt action from the authorities, including the transfer of officials under the Home Minister’s direction.” CM Biren Singh also assured that the state government’s reports are being sent, and necessary concerns are being addressed by the central government. In response to emerging challenges related to the alleged dual role of Assam Rifles, CM Biren Singh announced the decision to cancel the Free Movement Regime. He mentioned discussions between the state government and the center. He also revealed that “the central government has assured plans for deploying another border guarding force to address border management.”
Regarding MLA K Ranjit’s question on the need for effective deployment of over 40,000 state security forces, including commandos, Manipur Rifles, and Village Defense Forces at around 10 hotspots with high levels of violence, CM Biren Singh addressed these concerns, saying that “a coordinated effort between central and state forces, with deployments at approximately 100 locations, has resulted in a notable decline in violence at these hotspots, signaling considerable improvement in the overall situation”. Regarding the Moreh incident where armed miscreants are brandishing weapons at the Assam Rifles, CM Biren said that ongoing investigations are being conducted by the government, including investigation at the level of the Prime Minister, and the army’s independent investigation.
