AMWJU journalists visit Thayon and Tamaram villages for organic farming awareness

All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU), as a part of promoting awareness about organic farming practices through a Two-day Media Sensitization Programme on Horticulture Schemes, organised along the Horticulture Department of Manipur, visited two villages where MOMA has taken the initiative to help the farmer.
This programme, held in conjunction with the Golden Jubilee Celebration of AMWJU and the Manipur Press Club (MPC).
The first session of the awareness campaign took place at Loktak Hall of the Press Club on May 15, 2024. During this session, various topics related to horticulture and organic farming were discussed to sensitize the media about the importance and benefits of these practices.
As a part of the second day of the workshop, participants visited Thayon Kom Village, followed by a visit to Tamaram Tangkhul Village Ngarian in the Imphal East district for interactions with farmers today.
In Thayon Kom Village, Florence Thayon, a pineapple farmer, shared her experience emphasizing the community’s commitment to organic methods despite high labor costs and limited profitability. MOMA is the key buyer of their organic products, indicating a supportive market for these farmers.
The village chief, M. Achung Kom explained how they have been planting ginger and banana organically along with Pineapple with assistance from MOMA. Another farmer, K. Sondhaya Kom highlighted their initiative of planting pineapples without the use of chemicals, due to the high cost of chemical inputs and a commitment to organic farming.
These visits provided journalists with first-hand experience and insights into the challenges and successes of organic farming in the region.
