Imphal, April 15:
The All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO) has strongly condemned a viral video allegedly showing suspected Kuki militants desecrating the Meitei cultural flag. In the video, individuals in combat gear, armed with sophisticated weapons, are seen spitting on and kicking the sacred seven-colour flag — an act AMUCO described as deeply disrespectful and harmful to ongoing peace initiatives.
Addressing a press conference at the AMUCO office in Kwakeithel Bazar, President Ph. Nando Luwang expressed serious concern over the incident. He stated that the act constitutes an affront to the sentiments of the Meitei community and warned that such actions could derail the peace talks between Kuki and Meitei civil society organisations, currently facilitated by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
“The government of India must not overlook this serious insult to the sentiments of a community by members of another,” Nando Luwang said. He demanded immediate identification and action against those involved in the incident, stressing that such behaviour violates the spirit of peace, secularism, and constitutional values.
He further urged the Centre to ensure that Meitei pilgrims are allowed to visit Mount Thangjing — a sacred site for the community — without hindrance. Drawing parallels with the security arrangements for the Amarnath Yatra, he called for similar measures to safeguard the right to religious freedom and peaceful worship for Meitei devotees.
AMUCO reaffirmed that the Meitei community will not compromise its right to access and perform rituals at Mount Thangjing and urged the Central government to provide adequate security for future pilgrimages to the site.
