A Beacon of Light Dimmed: Ram Muivah mourns the passing of Pope Francis, champion of the marginalised

Ukhrul, April 23:

Ram Muivah, IAS (Retd.), Member of the Manipur Legislative Assembly and Chairman of the Committee on Estimates, has expressed deep sorrow over the demise of His Holiness Pope Francis, calling him “a luminous voice of moral clarity in an age of turbulence” and “a bridge-builder in a divided world.”
In a heartfelt tribute issued today, Muivah described the Pope as a spiritual beacon whose life embodied humility, mercy, and selfless service to humanity. “His Holiness Pope Francis was not just the leader of the Roman Catholic Church; he was the people’s Pope — a voice for the voiceless and a symbol of hope for millions across the globe,” Muivah stated.
Highlighting the Pope’s legacy as the first pontiff from the Global South, Muivah noted how Francis brought global attention to the plight of the marginalized, urging a shift in global consciousness towards compassion and equity. “He reminded us that true greatness lies in simplicity and courageous truth,” he added.
Muivah also emphasized Pope Francis’s commitment to peace, interfaith dialogue, and environmental justice, calling his vision of a “Church of the poor for the poor” a moral compass for the modern era. “At a time of escalating war, rising inequality, and climate crisis, the world has lost a rare leader who spoke both to the soul of the world and the conscience of power,” he said.
To the Catholic community in Manipur, the 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide, and all who saw Pope Francis as a symbol of unity and hope, Muivah extended his heartfelt condolences. “May we honour his legacy by walking the path of unity, justice, and compassion,” he concluded, offering a prayer: “Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord.”
The passing of Pope Francis marks the end of an era — but his spirit and teachings, as Muivah affirms, will continue to inspire generations to come.
