The mortal remains of Soibam Orthelo (45 years) from Heinoupok was handed over to family members for last rites. Soibam Orthelo was at Churachandpur working, when the violence of May 3 between two communities erupted and as a result, was unable to leave Churachandpur. He was allegedly killed by Kukis at the peak of the May 3 violence.
A Family member of Orthelo said, “When violence erupted on May 3, Orthelo was working and staying at the residence of a village chief. However, Kukis started searching for Meiteis in Churachandpur after May 3 and Orthelo managed to hide for some time. We came to know that he was killed on May 8 and this was confirmed on May 11.”
The mortal remain of Orthelo was transported from Churachandpur District Hospital to Imphal by Helicopter and were handed over to the family members at Heinoupok. A team of Imphal West Police led by OC Khogendra picked up the dead body of Orthelo from IGAR South, Mantripukhri at around 1:00 pm and was handed to family members at around 3:00 pm for performing the last rites as per ritual.
It may be mentioned that out of 4 bodies airlifted from Churachandpur District Hospital, the mortal remain of Ibochou from Sabungkhok were not accepted by his family members, as the last rites of Ibochou had already been performed before and as a result, the dead body was handed over to Municipality. The other 3, namely Soibam Orthelo from Heinoupok, Sunilkumar from Kumbi, and Ibemhal from Khuga Tampak were handed over to their respective families for performing their last rites.
