Imphal, Aug 16:

The third FIPRESCI-India Online Film Appreciation Course which will have 12 sessions will be held from September 23 to 30, 2023. On Monday to Friday, the session will be held from 3 pm to 5 pm and on Saturdays and Sundays 1 pm to 5 pm. Prof. N. Manu Chakravarthy is the course director and N. Vidyashankar is the coordinator. Medium of instruction is English. Registration fee is Rs 1000/-.
The Film Appreciation course conducted by the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) India chapter in 2021 was designed with a historical, intellectual and cultural perspective with focus on film perception. Based on the previous experience, in 2022 a revised format was implemented focusing on the different elements of cinema and its various aspects and how ultimately, they synthesize in an intellectually and culturally satisfying work. An alternate mode of understanding cinema was explored.
In the 2023 edition, the FIPRESCI-India shall incorporate these two formats of film perception and elements of film making and extend it to ask the basic questions and seek answers as to “What makes a film important or significant?” – which challenges every film audience. In answering this question, film critic Mathew Mahler, says that its same effect wouldn’t exist if it was a book or a play and that cinema i) has to be more than mere entertainment (or at least be perfect in an iconoclastic way), ii) has to innovate or influence the craft itself in technical or artistic ways, as to capture or reflect a cultural or historical moment, and iii) has to open the mind or imagination to new ideas or ways of seeing the world. The 3rd FIPRESCI-India Online Film Appreciation Course 2023 would like to recognize and address these parameters.
FIPRESCI-India chapter has been very active in spreading healthy film culture through its members by imparting film education at various Universities, Colleges, Film Schools, Academies and also through regular publications. The online film appreciation course it initiated during the dark times of the pandemic in the year 2021 had caught the imagination of the pan Indian film enthusiasts and also film buffs from the neighbouring countries. The main objective of the course is to develop a well informed and critically equipped community of cineastes for the articulation of already existing and rich experiences of film viewing. The response to the course was overwhelming and as the demand continued, the event has now been made into an annual activity of FIPRESCI.
