A significant number of women raised questions as to why they were being prevented from meeting the Chief Minister, especially considering that just a week or two ago, thousands of mothers were allowed to meet him when he was expected to resign and submit his resignation to the Governor.
According to the women participating in the protest, they took to the streets with the specific intention of meeting CM N. Biren Singh, submitting a memorandum, and pleading with him to promptly resolve the conflict.
During the protest, a woman spoke up, highlighting the fact that many of her friends had become widows and others had tragically lost their children. She directly questioned the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister, asking how many more lives had to be affected and how much more suffering the central and state governments needed to witness before initiating the peace process in Manipur.
However, as the women began a peaceful rally from Singjamei Market, a combined team of Rapid Action Forces and state forces intervened and halted their progress at the traffic point of Singjamei Chinga Makhong, just a few meters away from the market.
Nine mothers who had recently experienced the loss of their husbands and loved ones in Khamenlok expressed their purpose for being there – to submit a memorandum and speak with the Chief Minister. Unfortunately, the obstruction of the rally at Chingamakhong by the combined team of Rapid Action Forces and State Police prevented them from achieving their goal of advancing peace initiatives.
In response, the mothers declared their unwavering resolve to remain at Chinga Makhong until the Chief Minister personally came to meet them. They stressed the urgent need for the government to take concrete steps to restore peace in Manipur as soon as possible. Alternatively, they warned that if their demands were not met, the Meiteis would take matters into their own hands and wage war against the Kukis. The mothers emphasized that every Meitei man and woman was ready to make the ultimate sacrifice to protect Manipur from disintegration, without hesitation.
Meanwhile, organizers are working on arranging a meeting between the representatives of the mothers and the Chief Minister of the state, N. Biren Singh, to make a definitive and positive decision regarding the peace process. However, the mothers insisted that they would not go to meet the Chief Minister at his residence; rather, he must come and meet them at their protest site.
The protest rally, organized by Thawai Mirel and Meira Paibis, took place at Singjamei Market on Monday. Its primary objective was to submit a memorandum to CM N. Biren Singh and discuss potential ways forward for the peaceful resolution of conflicts in Manipur.
