Imphal, April 13:
Two senior representatives of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), former MLAs Md. Fajur Rahman and Md. Amin Shah, left for New Delhi today to file a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. The contentious legislation, which was cleared by both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, has drawn strong criticism from the Congress party nationwide.
Speaking to reporters at Congress Bhavan, BT Road, former Chief Minister and Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Okram Ibobi Singh accused the BJP-led central government of systematically eroding the secular fabric of the Indian Constitution. “The very concept of secularism is under attack,” he said, adding that senior Congress leaders including Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi had opposed the bill both in the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha.
Ibobi Singh also revealed that the Congress party has already filed multiple petitions in the Supreme Court in relation to the Waqf (Amendment) Act, and that the MPCC is now following suit to uphold the constitutional values and principles enshrined in the Indian democracy.
“The MPCC shares the same commitment to protecting the Constitution. There is no difference in our stand when it comes to safeguarding the secular and democratic framework of the nation,” he said.
MPCC president K. Meghachandra echoed similar sentiments and declared that the Congress party will continue to resist any attempt by the BJP to distort the identity of the nation and its constitutional values. “The BJP is pushing an ideological agenda that threatens the pluralistic ethos of the country. The Congress will fight it both legally and politically,” Meghachandra said.
The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 has sparked controversy across the country, with opposition parties alleging that it dilutes the rights of minority communities and undermines the constitutional commitment to secularism.
The MPCC delegation is expected to meet with All India Congress Committee (AICC) legal experts in New Delhi before officially filing their petition in the Supreme Court in the coming days.
