Thoubal, July 3:

A 48-hour bandh, called in protest against the killing of the founder of KIM Educational Society, has thrown Thoubal district into turmoil, disrupting daily life and sparking widespread condemnation against the perpetrators. The bandh, initiated by a Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed in response to the murder of 65-year-old Th. Ibomcha, commenced at 6 am today, paralyzing the region. Ibomcha, a respected figure in Khangabok, was allegedly kidnapped by an armed group on June 18 and later found murdered on June 29 in Lishang Hidden area of Lilong Chajing, under circumstances linked to extortion threats.
The local community, incensed by the incident, has mobilized in large numbers, blocking NH 102 and other key roadways since early morning. Vehicular movement, including that of security forces, has been severely hampered as protesters have set up barricades and burned tires at strategic points such as Wangbal, Khangabok Bazar, and Arong Bridge.
In addition to disrupting traffic, the JAC has enforced a shutdown of shops and businesses in Wangbal, Wangjing, Khangabok, Athokpam, and Thoubal areas. The committee’s demands include justice for Ibomcha and a clear explanation from the armed group responsible for his killing. Until these demands are met, the JAC has declared an economic and social boycott of the group in the Khangabok area.
The situation remains tense as local clubs, women’s groups, and concerned citizens continue their protest, demanding swift action and accountability from authorities regarding this heinous crime.
Late Th. Ibomcha, hailing from Khangabok Awang Leikai and son of Amusana Sastri, was known for his contributions to education in the region through the KIM Educational Society. His untimely death has galvanized the community, uniting them in grief and anger against the violence that claimed his life.
The district administration and security forces are closely monitoring the situation to prevent any escalation of tensions and ensure the safety and security of the public during this period of unrest.
