Imphal is experiencing another round of severe flooding today due to incessant rainfall since June 30, leading to rising water levels and widespread inundation across the region. Once more, several places, including the Khwairamband Keithel area of Thangal Bazar, are flooded today. Almost all major rivers — Iril River, Nambul River, Imphal River, and Thoubal River — are running beyond the danger level, and river banks of these rivers have breached at various places.
Last month, Imphal faced devastating floods triggered by Cyclone Remal, resulting in the tragic loss of five lives and the establishment of thousands of relief camps to accommodate those displaced by the disaster. The Heingang area was particularly hard-hit, with many residents still sheltering in community halls and other temporary accommodations.
The recent continuous rainfall has exacerbated the situation, causing water levels to rise to dangerous levels. Authorities have issued a warning, urging residents to stay alert as efforts are underway to reinforce embankments along the banks of the Imphal and Nambul rivers. Despite these measures, several areas have already experienced flooding. Kekrupat, Lainingthou Awanba, Hatta, Thokchom Leikai, Singjamei, and Keikhu are among the worst affected. Khundrakpam Kendra, along with areas bordering Yumnam Khunou and Sambrei, and regions near the Dolaithabi project canal, such as Samurai and Tangam, have also reported significant flooding.
The Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Imphal West has issued a stern warning: “Catchment areas of Imphal and Nambul rivers are reported to be receiving continuous rainfall,” it said, adding that the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted “heavy to very heavy rainfall activity in Manipur for the next five days.” Since the warning was issued, water levels have risen significantly, surpassing the danger mark. Moidangpok Khunou, Sajirok, Heigrujam Mamang, Khabi, and their surrounding areas in Imphal West are experiencing severe flooding. The Maklang River is also swelling, with Lampha already overflowing and flooding nearby areas.
The persistent rain has complicated efforts to manage the floodwaters. Rising water levels continue to pose a serious threat, making the reinforcement of embankments crucial to prevent further disasters. Authorities are urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and adhere to official warnings to ensure their safety.
As the situation remains critical, authorities are working tirelessly to mitigate the impact of the floods and provide necessary assistance to those affected.
