Imphal, June 17:

Kuki women have obstructed the movement of more than 500 trucks and vehicles transporting goods and petroleum products on National Highway 37, linking Imphal to Silchar via Jiribam, a border town in Manipur on Sunday, according to official sources.
This incident occurred for the first time at Leingangpokpi and Torbung areas, located approximately 4 to 5 kilometers from the Jiribam district headquarters. The blockade started around 8:30 am when trucks loaded with essential items from Jiribam towards Imphal were halted.
The convoy of heavy vehicles was escorted by personnel from the Border Security Force (BSF) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Despite their presence, they refrained from intervening due to the sensitive nature of the situation, urging authorities to resolve the issue promptly before taking further action, sources reported.
Witnesses reported the presence of 20-23 armed men suspected to be Kuki militants accompanying the women who blocked the roads. Drivers, who turned their vehicles back upon encountering the blockade, expressed concerns over their safety in these areas known for militant activity.
In response to the security risks, drivers transporting petroleum products and gas cylinders opted to return to Jiribam. As a result, over 500 heavy vehicles remain stranded in Jiribam due to inadequate security measures to facilitate their journey towards Imphal.
Drivers recalled a previous incident on April 16, 2024, when Kuki militants fired upon a vehicle carrying petroleum products on NH-37, resulting in injuries to two drivers. The current blockade highlights ongoing security challenges affecting transport along this vital highway.
