Torrential rains in the wake of Cyclone Remal have resulted in severe waterlogging at Manipur’s Raj Bhavan, officials reported on Friday. The heavy downpour over the last few days has caused significant flooding in the Imphal Valley, claiming three lives and affecting thousands.
A senior official stated that water accumulated within the Raj Bhavan premises following breaches in the embankments of the Imphal River at various locations. “The situation at the Raj Bhavan has improved considerably compared to the last two days. The inundated areas will be cleared soon depending on the overall weather condition,” he said.
The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) spokesperson, Ningombam Bupendra, shared photographs on social media platform X, highlighting the rare sight of the Manipur Governor personally inspecting the water levels at the Raj Bhavan. “Raj Bhavan is getting submerged in flood. It is rarest to see Manipur Governor personally checking water level in the Raj Bhavan,” Bupendra wrote.
The unprecedented flooding has left large parts of the Imphal area underwater. Bupendra stressed the urgent need to reduce the flood level swiftly to prevent further damage.
In response to Bupendra’s post, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi on X, remarking, “And the outgoing PM is deep in meditation.” Prime Minister Modi began a meditation retreat at the Vivekananda Rock Memorial in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, on the evening of May 30, which is scheduled to conclude on the evening of June 1.
Manipur’s Minister for Water Resources and Relief & Disaster Management, Awangbou Newmai, reported on Thursday evening that a total of 188,143 people have been affected by the floods, with at least 24,265 houses damaged. The severe flooding, caused by breaches in river embankments, has prompted the government to declare a two-day public holiday for all state offices until May 31.
Efforts are ongoing to manage the floodwaters and provide relief to the affected residents. The government and various agencies are working to restore normalcy and ensure the safety and well-being of the people in the flood-hit areas.
