As Manipur grapples with the aftermath of Cyclone Remal, Chief Minister N Biren Singh has expressed his appreciation for the tireless efforts of emergency services and local organizations in responding to the crisis. In a post on the microblogging site X, Singh commended the dedication and bravery of those involved in the relief operations.
“As we work through the aftermath of Cyclone Remal, I appreciate the dedication of those who have stepped up to tackle these immediate challenges,” Singh posted. “I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Manipur police, MR, IRB, Fire Service, SDRF, local clubs, CSOs, VDF, and the youths for their extraordinary courage and efficiency.”
The cyclone’s impact has been particularly severe in Imphal, where Raj Medicity hospital faced significant operational challenges due to flooding. The hospital’s ground floor was inundated following heavy rainfall, necessitating the evacuation of patients to other facilities including RIMS, JNIMS, and several other hospitals. The rescue operation at Raj Medicity, conducted on the evening of May 29, involved coordinated efforts by Arambai Tengol, State Forces, and the State Disaster Response Force team.
Other prominent areas of Imphal, such as Khwairamband Ima Market, Hotel Classic Grande, DM College campus, and the Manipur Press Club, also experienced severe flooding. While the intensity of rainfall has decreased compared to the peak on May 28, substantial precipitation continued in several districts until 3 pm on May 29.
According to the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Manipur, rainfall data recorded on May 29 showed variations across districts. Kakching district received 6 mm, while Tamenglong district recorded the highest at 37.6 mm. Bishnupur district reported 32.2 mm, Imphal West 25.2 mm, and Imphal East 17.2 mm of rainfall.
The previous day, May 28, saw even more intense rainfall, exacerbating the situation. The Directorate of Environment recorded substantial amounts of precipitation across the state: Bishnupur district received 116.2 mm, Churachandpur district 69.2 mm, Imphal East district 86.8 mm, Imphal West district 106.2 mm, Kakching district 63 mm, Noney district 107.6 mm, Tamenglong district 157 mm, and Ukhrul district 142 mm.
