In the wake of Cyclone Remal, Manipur grapples with severe flooding triggered by incessant rainfall since Sunday. The deluge has led to a rapid rise in water levels, causing major rivers like Nambul and Imphal to overflow into various parts of Imphal East and West districts.
The inundation has wreaked havoc, submerging roads, residential areas, and government facilities. Particularly hard-hit are regions like Khurai, Soibam Leikai, and Porompat in Imphal East, where the overflowing Imphal River has caused extensive flooding. Lamlong Keithel, along with the Lamlong-Pangei road, has been engulfed by floodwaters, while breaches along the riverbank near Keirang and Lairiyengbam Leikai have inundated hundreds of homes.
Areas like Hatta Golapati Maning Leikai, and Kekrupat are grappling with floodwaters from the swollen Imphal River, extending to North AOC and Khoyathong traffic point.
Heavily impacted by the disaster, several areas within the Heingang and Khurai Assembly constituencies in Imphal East district now grapple with inundation, with floodwaters rising to chest-level in numerous locations.
Additional areas such as Sagolband Road, Kakwa, Kwakeithel, and Uripok are also affected.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh conducted an inspection of the inundated Khurai area last night. State authorities have mobilized teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to aid in evacuations alongside local efforts.
In Ukhrul district, landslides along the Imphal-Ukhrul road have left numerous vehicles stranded, while widespread power outages afflict Ukhrul and Kamjong districts due to electrical faults caused by the relentless rain and strong winds associated with Cyclone Remal.
