Pambei-led UNLF has issued a condolence statement on the demise of Aheibam Birendra. The press release, issued by Charairongba Thokchom, states that Aheibam Birendra, born on July 1, 1945, at Chingamkha Heiranggoithong Jaganatha Achouba Aheibam Leikai, was the son of Aheibam Noyon and Aheibam Ongbi Maipakpi. Known for his studious nature, he attended Johnstone Higher Secondary School before continuing his education at DM College and Guwahati University, where he earned a Master’s degree in English.
“He taught at Oriental College and was a guest lecturer in the English Department at Manipur University. He was deputed to the Art and Culture Department as Director and also served as the Managing Director of the Manipur Film Development Corporation (MFDC). In 1999, he became the Director of the Government of India’s North East Zone Cultural Centre in Dimapur,” the statement added.
According to the Pambei-led UNLF’s statement, “A. Birendra joined the liberation movement in 1964 and the UNLF in 1965. By 1966, he had become the Party Secretary Organization (Home). He was a founding member of the Pan Manipuri Youth League (PANMIL), a columnist for the Ireipak Newspaper, a member of the Manipuri Polo Association, and the secretary of Hueiyen Laanlong (HULA) Sindam Sang at Keisamthong Laishram Leirak. He also played a key role in translating ‘Chainarol – Way of the Warrior’ into English.”
Pambei-led UNLF stated that due to a spine problem since 2023, Birendra passed away on May 10, 2024. They described him as a “precious gem of Manipur.”
