Meetei (Meitei) Tribe Union calls for transparent land allotment process

IT News
Imphal, May 13:

Meetei (Meitei) Tribe Union (MMTU) appeal for accountability in land patta allotment procedures, aiming to empower the Meitei people and ensure equitable access to loans, schemes and opportunities for socio-economic development.
In a press release issued today, MMTU has voiced concerns over alleged corrupt practices within the revenue and settlement department regarding the allotment of land titles, particularly to those below the poverty line. The MMTU emphasized that officials should refrain from exploiting individuals by levying unjust premiums and taxes, and from unnecessarily complicating the procedures of allotment to facilitate corruption.
Citing a survey revealing that 70 percent of Manipur’s population was landless in 2011, the MMTU highlighted the resulting difficulties faced by these individuals, including obstacles in accessing loans and government schemes due to the lack of land titles.
The Union attributed this predicament to the inadequate implementation of the MLR& LR Act 1960, compounded by self-serving actions of those in positions of power.
Urging relevant authorities to refrain from engaging in such activities, the MMTU underscored the importance of villagers applying for land titles through proper channels, namely their respective Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO), by diligently completing application forms. The organization also offered assistance to those in need throughout the application process.
