Aheibam Birendra, a prominent figure in Manipur’s cultural landscape, after a prolonged illness passed away today. Birendra, aged 79, breathed his last, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated service to the promotion of Manipur’s rich cultural heritage.
Born on October 1st, 1947, in Singjamei Chingamakha Aheibam Leikai, Imphal West, Aheibam Birendra’s contributions to the preservation and advancement of Manipur’s culture are widely revered.
Birendra pursued his academic endeavors with fervor, obtaining an MA in English from Guwahati University. He imparted his knowledge for over 34 years as a teacher of English Literature at Oriental College, Imphal. His commitment to education and cultural enrichment extended beyond the classroom.
Notably, Birendra held esteemed positions within the government, serving as the Director of Arts and Culture for the Government of Manipur and later as the Director of the North East Zone Cultural Centre under the Government of India. His involvement in various cultural organizations as a life member underscored his passion for the arts and theater.
During his tenure as Director of the Arts and Culture Department, Birendra spearheaded several initiatives aimed at fostering cultural growth. He played a pivotal role in the establishment of a Cultural Complex at the Palace compound and the State Archives office in Imphal, along with the inception of the Department of Archaeology office. Additionally, he inaugurated the Bhagyachandra National Dance Festival, a biennial event that celebrates Manipuri dance traditions.
Birendra’s contributions extended to the realm of cinema, as he served as the Managing Director of the Manipur Film Development Corporation, furthering the state’s cinematic endeavors.
His dedication to cultural preservation transcended geographical boundaries, as evidenced by his translation of Chainarol, an ancient manuscript, into English for the International Committee of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, facilitated by Human Rights Alert (HRA) Manipur.
The passing of Aheibam Birendra is mourned by the cultural community and beyond, yet his enduring impact on Manipur’s cultural legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
