The aftermath of violence in Torbung Mayai Leikai and Phoubakchao Ekai continues to unfold as residents grapple with the devastating consequences of conflict. Families, displaced from their homes due to the violence, are enduring dire living conditions, with many forced to inhabit makeshift shelters and sacks. The loss of homes has been compounded by the lack of employment opportunities, leaving residents struggling to rebuild their lives.
Langpoklakpam Ibetombi, a resident of Torbung Mayai Leikai, shared the challenges faced by the community, stating, “We have managed to return but our situation is very bad. It’s been one year. Our neighbor’s young man, his house completely destroyed, is now living in a sack.” This poignant testimony reflects the harsh reality confronting many families in the area.
Moreover, the absence of substantive government intervention exacerbates the plight of the affected communities. Longjam Ibungo Singh, hailing from Phoubakchao Ikhai, lamented, “My house got burnt down on May 3. But, the issue is the government is not doing anything.” Singh’s statement underscores the frustration and despair felt by residents who are grappling with the aftermath of the violence without adequate support.
The uncertainty surrounding the conflict further compounds the challenges faced by residents. As one resident expressed, “If the war subsided, then we will be able to go to their places. Many people can’t go to their own places.” This sentiment reflects the longing for peace and stability, which is essential for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of affected communities.
