Interfaith Forum appeals for Free and Fair Elections in Manipur

IT News
Imphal, April 7:

In a collective effort to promote peace and harmony in Manipur, a group of religious leaders representing the Interfaith Forum for Peace and Harmony issued a heartfelt appeal to all stakeholders involved in the electoral process. The appeal, aimed at ensuring free and fair elections for the 18th Lok Sabha in 2024, underscores the importance of creating an environment conducive to democratic participation and responsible decision-making.
The religious leaders, representing Hindu, Christian, Islamic, Buddhist, Jain, and Tingkao Ragwang communities, directed their appeal to various entities, including the state government, the Election Commission, security forces, responsible citizens, candidates, and their political parties.
Expressing their shared aspiration for a peaceful and prosperous Manipur, the religious leaders emphasized the significance of choosing capable and dedicated representatives who can address the current challenges facing the state. These challenges include the prolonged communal violence and the plight of thousands of individuals, including women, children, elderly, and youth residing in relief camps.
Acknowledging the extraordinary circumstances in which the election is taking place, amidst ethnic conflicts and violence, the religious leaders stressed the importance of electing leaders committed to ending violence and fostering peace at both governmental and grassroots levels.
In their appeal, the religious leaders urged all stakeholders to refrain from engaging in practices that undermine the democratic process and voters’ rights to make well-informed decisions. They specifically called for an end to violence and encouraged healthy dialogue and debate to educate the electorate.
Additionally, the religious leaders emphasized the need to reject inducements such as monetary bribes and feasts in exchange for votes. They urged candidates to demonstrate their ability to address Manipur’s challenges rather than resorting to vote-buying tactics.
Furthermore, the religious leaders advocated for the sanctity of the electoral process by discouraging the use of religion for electoral gains and calling for an end to proxy voting, ensuring that every voter has the opportunity to exercise their right responsibly.
In concluding their appeal, the Interfaith Forum reiterated its commitment to promoting peace, security, and development in Manipur and urged all stakeholders to join hands in fostering a democratic and inclusive electoral process.
