Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh convened a meeting with the Border Road Organization (BRO) to discuss the implementation of an additional 70 km of border fencing along the Indo-Myanmar border on the Manipur side.
“Held a meeting with the officials of BRO and deliberated the plan to begin construction of an additional 70 km of border fencing along the Indo-Myanmar border. I was joined by Chief Secretary, DGP & officials from the Home Department.” Biren stated on his Facebook page.
In view of the rise in illegal immigration and drugs smuggling from the neighbouring country, safeguarding our porous borders has become an urgent necessity, the Chief Minister added.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister emphasized the significance of border fencing in preventing the influx of illegal immigrants. He further mentioned that the BRO has been assigned the task of identifying vulnerable stretches along the international boundary for fencing.
Biren also informed that the Free Movement Regime with Myanmar, which permits travel up to 16 km into each other’s territory, is currently suspended. He revealed that the state has requested the central government to permanently terminate the agreement.
