Various women organisations of the state including Keithel ladies today staged protests in various areas amid curfew imposed by the government of Manipur.
The district administrations of all affected regions of the state earlier yesterday relaxed the curfew from 5 am to 6 pm however, late in the evening, the district administrations of Imphal West and Imphal East and all Kuki inhabited areas were reimposed. Source said that the decision to reimpose the curfew was taken in a high-level security meeting chaired by Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
Following the decision of the government, the Commissioner of Home Department, T. Ranjit Singh issued an order to all district magistrates not to relax the curfew today (July 19). The order stated that the district magistrates have been reimposed following the reports of the proposed Rally organised by the Universal Mothers’ Association (UMO), Lukmai Sellup of Ima Keithel No. 1, and Federation of Civil Societies Organised (FOCS).
Following the reimposition of the Curfew, Imphal East and Imphal West bore a deserted look with no vehicles moving on the streets and all shops and business establishments remaining closed. However, women organisations and Keithel ladies staged protest demonstrations in various areas in all the valley districts defying the curfew. Manipur Police in the presence of district magistrates tried to disperse the gathering appealing the protestors to remain indoors.
The protests were staged at Thangmeiband, Khuyathong, Sangaiprou, Khgenpalli, Singjamei, Keishamthong, Uripok, Sagolband, Konthoujam Maning Leikai, Sagoltongba, Langjing Achouba, Awang Khunou, Kangabam Leikai Apunba Nupi Lup, Naoremthong, Thangmeiband, Nagamapal, Kwakeithel, Khurai Soibam Leikai Apunba, Thoubal and Bishnupur Bazar.
Slogans denouncing the demand for separate administration and Narco-terrorism were used during the protest. The protestors also demanded the implementation of NRC in Manipur.
